    Course Description

This introductory course is designed for first-year students in linguistic mediation, providing a foundational approach to English language proficiency and cultural understanding. It focuses on strengthening core language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while introducing students to the diverse cultures of the English-speaking world.

Through interactive classes, discussions, and practical exercises, students will explore how language reflects cultural identity, values, and perspectives. The course will also introduce key concepts in intercultural communication, laying the groundwork for effective mediation in multilingual contexts.

    Objectives

By the end of the course, students will:

    1. Develop essential language skills in English, achieving a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
    2. Gain a basic understanding of cultural diversity within English-speaking countries.
    3. Begin to identify and interpret cultural references, idiomatic expressions, and societal norms in English.
    4. Build confidence in using English for everyday interactions, both spoken and written.

    Course Structure

The course will be organized around thematic units that include:

    • Core English Skills Development: Lessons focused on building a strong foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure, with practical exercises to apply these skills.
    • Introduction to Cultural Studies: Exploration of cultural aspects such as family, traditions, and popular media in the UK, US, and other English-speaking countries.
    • Basic Intercultural Communication Skills: Activities to introduce students to concepts like cultural sensitivity, non-verbal communication, and context interpretation.
    • Project-Based Learning: Simple projects where students research and present on cultural elements (such as festivals, music, or foods) from English-speaking cultures to apply language skills creatively.

    Assessment

Student progress will be evaluated through:

    • Short written assignments and reflections on cultural topics.
    • Simple oral presentations to build confidence in spoken English.
    • Vocabulary and grammar exercises to assess language development.
